Heart of the Passage: | 2 Kings 9-10 |
Overview
Jehu, newly anointed king of Israel, tarries out his instructions to "smite the house of Ahab thy master, that I [God] may avenge the blood of my servants the prophets" (9:7). In quick succession, Jehu dispatches Jehoram (king of Israel), Ahaziah (king of Judah), Jezebel (wicked wife of Ahab), the entire family of Ahab, and finally the false prophets, worshipers, and priests of Baal. Meanwhile in the southern kingdom of Judah, intrigue and bloodshed also prevail. After Ahaziah's death, his mother Athaiiah usurps the throne and seeks to secure her position by killing all the royal offspring. Only the infant Joash survives, and in time becomes one of the greatest reforming kings of Judah. |

Your Daily Walk
Here is a one-question quiz. Place a check (×) by the most correct answer: Spiritual change in the life of a Christian is ...
____ a. all right if you don't overdo it.
____ b. very beneficial for my friends.
____ c. something to be pursued wholeheartedly.
Although "b" is a true statement, the best response is "c": something to be pursued diligently. God desires continual, wholehearted conformity "to the image of his Son" (Romans 8:29). It's not enough merely to begin a program of change. God wants to complete what He begins. That's why Jehu, though he started out well in handling his God-given assignment, lost God's full commendation because he did a halfway job (10:28-29).
Think back to the last major area of change you began to work on in your life: a bad habit, a new priority, a neglected relationship. Did you approach the assignment wholeheartedly or halfheartedly-' Are there still unwritten chapters in your story of "How God Helped Me to Change"? If so, what needs to be written today? |
