Overview
Chronologically, today's section fits after chapter 3. Hut thematically it provides a fitting conclusion to the entire book of Judges. What happens to a nation when "every man [does] that which [is] right in his own eyes"? The grisly details contained in these chapters will provide the answer: gross idolatry, perversion, brutality, immorality, and total disregard for the Word of God. When at last Israel's national conscience is pricked by a shocking "telegram" sent to the 12 tribes, the response is brutal outrage. |

Your Daily Walk
If something is worth saying, it is worth repeating. Look at the first verse of chapters I8 and 19, and the last verse of chapter 21 to discover a "key'" to the book of Judges. Write it in the space provided:
There is more to that phrase than the simple fact that Israel had yet to crown her first king. It is an acknowledgment that the nation had forsaken her true King—the God of her forefathers. In God's own words, "They have rejected me, that I should not reign over them" (1 Samuel 8:7; 10:19); and the result was national chaos and corruption.
There is something more important than the system a nation is governed by, and that is the people's attitude toward the Supreme Governor, the Lord of heaven and earth. Select a day this month and declare it a personal or family "day of fasting and prayer." Pray that God will bring revival to your nation, your community, your family—and that He will let it begin with you! |
Insight
A Man and a Tribe, Two Sad Stories —
As you read chapters 17 and 18, the accounts of Micah and the tribe of Dan, watch for some striking contrasts:
• Micah wanted more of God's favor (17:13); Dan wanted more of God's land (18:9).
• Micah set up images (17:5); the Danites stole images (18:17).
• Micah returned to his house without his gods (18:26); the Danites worshiped new gods but not in the house of God (18:31). |
